This week I had the good fortune to run the Yahi Trail in Chico’s gorgeous Upper Bidwell Park. A couple of hours dancing between dust-dry golden grasses on one side and the clear-green Chico Creek on the other.
Soon after starting, the trail took me into the canyon area; beautiful, glassy, slow-cool-fractured basalt eroded into a Dr. Suessian landscape of bumps, stacks, and pools. I swam at the one pictured here. At 25 °C, the water was perfect for my overheated body. The highlight of my swim was making my way to the water chute between the rocks on the left. Holding the rocks on either side with my hands, the current rippled over me waving my torso and legs like ribbons in the wind. It was a deliriously joyful moment, and already seems to be one of my deep life memories.
